Procurement
In 2019, the State of Minnesota purchased $29.8 million in sustainable products and services measured by third-party certifications and other criteria, an increase in nearly $8 million in sustainable spending. Most of this increase came from the sustainable share of spending on electronic equipment and furniture. More than ever, the state is leveraging its purchasing power to improve environmental, social, and economic outcomes.

Accomplishments
In 2019, the state’s Sustainable Purchasing Program received a Government Innovation Award from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota.
In October 2019, the Minnesota Department of Transportation announced two 25-year community solar subscriptions for 7.4 million kilowatts per year, approximately 24% of their electricity use.
Barriers
Several product categories included in priority contracts, such as network services, do not have established sustainability standards.
The state's procurement system has functional limitations and cannot prominently display the sustainable choices on contract to make it an easy choice for purchasing staff.
