Reducing energy consumption through the use of technology.

Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation is installing a more efficient HVAC system this summer at the Eveleth administration building. Once commissioned a new baseline for energy consumption will be established to inform remaining opportunities for improvement. The agency's gross energy consumption is 1% of the enterprise.

The agency has a goal of 100% LED conversion at the Eveleth administration building in FY20. Installing a combination of LED lighting, dimmers and motion sensors and occupancy sensing thermostats further reduces energy intensity. An LED retrofit is also scheduled at the Mining and Reclamation facility in Chisholm.

Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation GHG emissions remained constant in 2019. 73% of the agency's GHG emissions are from electricity, and the agency will target electricity emissions in 2020. IRRR accounts for less than 1% of the enterprise emissions.

Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation will continue to explore innovative ways to reduce its carbon footprint and further the goal of becoming a sustainability leader in northeastern Minnesota. A major achievement was the construction of 17 KW solar array at the Giants Ridge Recreation Area facility in Biwabik. Since completion in mid-December and as of July 24, 2020 the array has produced 14.66 MWh and saved 22,700 lbs. of CO2 emissions.
